Lapis Lazuli

Lazurite is the main component of Lapis Lazuli gemstone, and it is the lazurite which gives it its deep blue colour. It also typically contained pyrite which accounts for the streaks of gold. Crystals were thought to be rare until large numbers of it were found in Afghanistan. In addition to to being used as a gemstone it was also used as one of the first eyeshadows. Powdered Lapis lazuli was once used to make ultramarine, which is one of the most expensive pigments. It is believed to bestow wisdom and honesty, self-awareness and dignity.
